Choosing the Right DIY Shed Foundation

Building a shed from DIY shed plans is a gratifying wood working project. These types of plans for sheds include virtually every aspect but we must still put serious thought into choosing the right foundation.

{As we know a firm foundation is critical for just about everything in life and none more so than in construction|It is vital to have a firm foundation for just about everything in life and none more so than in construction! So does this pertain to a shed?

Well like so many things the answer is it depends. Generally, in this case, it depends on size and site though there are further factors to consider.

The shed foundation serves a number of purposes. Mainly it ensures the load is distributed evenly across the ground and supports the weight of the shed. It must also include measures to stop plants from growing up from under the shed and protect the lumber that makes up the base from moisture coming up from the earth. For larger sheds the foundation is designed to stop it from moving through changes in climatic conditions.

There are two basic categories of shed foundations: on-grade (or floating) and frost proof. On-grade foundations are the simplest and fastest to build, do not need you to dig deep holes or pour concrete footings, they sit right on the ground and are adequate for all but the biggest sheds. Permanent frost proof foundations are by far the strongest option but are more complex and take more time to construct. They provide proof against movement caused by freeze/thaw cycles.

Which foundation you choose will be dictated by the size of the shed, the local climate and the ground conditions at the shed site. Indeed the smaller sheds can be positioned on existing paving stones or concrete and might not need a foundation at all. Shed's up to about 8' x 6' can be placed on crushed stone with treated timber foundations. If you are uncertain it is important to consult with a building inspector. Making a blunder at this point could make the purchase of your DIY shed plans a waste of good money!

Usually on-grade foundations are sufficient for most sheds and sites. They are swift and easy to put together, relatively cheap and may be adapted to suit even sloping sites. The components are readily purchased: wood, solid concrete blocks and gravel for example. It's easy to get the foundation level and square as the components are easy to put in place and move around. Additionally there are a number of differing alternatives such as solid concrete block, skid and timber frame foundations which will suit different sites and situations.

You will make sure you get the longest life from your shed by putting some time and energy into selecting and building the right foundation. Your DIY shed plans may suggest a particular foundation type based on the size of the shed so always follow that recommendation. Good quality plans for sheds will have taken the appropriate factors into account but ensure you get advice on your particular site. A shed is one of the most fantastic and gratifying wood working projects. Place it on a solid foundation and you will have that shed for many years to come.
